Preamble. I'm working on writing some books summarising views and what I've learn about Taiji, Meditation, Christianity, Buddhism, and Mental Health. I'm interested in Scribus as a means to format something I can send to a publisher or self-publish.

These are quick and dirty notes, with some things not from the video inserted where I thought relevant.

Edit → Master Pages.

We have Normal Left, Normal Right, with no styling.

Make new master page, Left Page, called EoP Left Page.

Note EoP is short for Enemies of Peace.

EoP Left Page

Margin top to have space. Add text box. Edit text in story editor. Name on left hand side, make this centred. Make it a bit smaller. She likes body text 11.5pt, so make header 11pt.

Use EB Garamond as font.

At the bottom, we want to add a page number. Add a text box at the bottom. A-C-S-p, or Insert → Character → Page Number. Centre it, make it Garamond.

EoP Right Page

Copy/paste box from left page. (We could use the grid for this.)

Note: look at createspace template for actual measurements.

Font and styles.

There are three kinds of styles: Paragraph, Character, Line.

Character:

• 11.5pt, Garamond

Paragraph:

• We want indented lines. So we want three para styles.
  • Indent to 0.25in, right justified.
• First Line, No Indent
• Chapter start: Drop Caps
  • No Indent
  • Drop Cap, 4 lines

Save as template.

Title Page.

Just title, subtitle, author.

Copyright page. Note: look up what to write on one of these. Is there a good book on self-publishing?

Align to the bottom by eye.

Introductory pages. E.g. list of other books. Once we've done this once, we can copy paste to new books.

For intro pages, make text frames manually.

Table of Contents (Note File → Document Setup: Table of Contents and Indices. Add a new Table of Contents.

Then right click a text frame that should generate an entry. For chapter pages, have a separate master page, two text boxes (or more), one for the chapter title, one for the actual text.

Random Note: Scribus supports Latex frames. So we can use this to insert maths if need be. (Though largely we'd like to avoid this and just have text and illustrations.)

Add more Normal Left, Normal Right.

Add pages with EoP master.

Document setup: sections. We can set page numbering, so that the thirteenth page is page number 1.

You can't have editable text frames in master pages. The workaround is to put guides on the master page and use them to make the text boxes.
